...that's what i did last night for the very first time at Shang. was a rather dull wedding considering there wasn't the typical "YUUUM SENG!!!" which you would find in almost every wedding dinner. instead, they chose to settle for a simple "CHEERS!", leaving everyone including us waiters feeling awkward. at least they presented every guest with a cute palm-sized teddy bear couple as souvenirs.
every waiter was assigned to a table and mine was beside paul's. kept seeing him steal food when no one was looking. neither of us had dinner and we were starving. the first course was very grand. all the waiters assembled outside the ballroom with the dishes and when the huge doors opened, we marched in in an orderly formation with italian background music and dry ice. cool huh...oh ya, and i even learned serving skills whereby we transform an ordinary fork and spoon into a powerful tong! haha..bet you can't do that. portioning the steamed fish was tricky. the outcome was suppose to be 10 nice slices of fish, ready to be serverd. mine was like all mashed up save for 2 slices. its really embarassing when everyone's staring at you, expecting quality service especially since they're dining at Shang. after the wedding, we had to roll the six-foot dining tables back to the store which was no mean feat. its really hard to control it unless you're really experienced.
just when i thought everything was gonna be easier, our supervisor called for all waiters to fall in. everyone was ordered to stand in a straight line and our pockets emptied. then i overheard someone saying that a guest lost his Nokia 7610 and demanded a strip search...just kidding, a spot check on all employees. fortunately, the phone wasn't found on any of us. now here comes the best part...remember the cute teddy bear couples i mentioned earlier? quite a number of waiters "koped" the teddy bears and kept them in their pockets, some even took 3! it was really hilarious seeing people pulling teddy bears outta their pockets during the check. poor them...they would have gotten away with it if not for that guest.
it was almost 1am when we left Shang. taxi was provided and it so happens that our driver was a wild racer. he actually drove non-stop to thailand once before, took him like 18 hours. he would make sharp turns here and there and drive really fast when no cars were around, leaving the three of us banging against each other at the back. i was slighty dizzy when i got off the cab. hope i don't ever meet that driver again.
